Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work, communicate and solve problems. For students, this shift is already changing what it means to be prepared for the future.

The question is no longer simply whether students should learn to use AI.

The more important question is:

What should students learn when AI can increasingly do many of the things we used to learn to do ourselves?

The answer isn't to learn less.

It is to learn differently.

From Memorisation to Understanding

For many years, education has placed significant emphasis on remembering information.

Students needed to remember formulas, definitions, facts and processes because accessing information was not always easy.

AI has changed this.

Today, information is easier to access than ever. Students can ask an AI tool to explain a concept, summarise information or generate examples within seconds.

But having access to information doesn't mean understanding it.

Students still need to know:

  • Why something is true
  • How different ideas connect
  • When to apply a particular method
  • How to recognise an incorrect answer
  • How to explain their reasoning

This makes deep understanding more important, not less.

Critical Thinking Becomes More Valuable

AI can produce an answer quickly, but speed doesn't guarantee accuracy.

Students therefore need to become better at questioning information rather than simply accepting it.

A strong learner should be able to ask:

Does this make sense?

What evidence supports this?

Is there another explanation?

What assumptions are being made?

How can I verify this?

These are critical-thinking skills that remain valuable regardless of how technology develops.

Students Need to Learn How to Work With AI

AI literacy will increasingly become part of everyday academic and professional life.

Students should understand how to use AI responsibly and effectively rather than treating it as a replacement for learning.

This includes knowing how to:

  • Ask better questions
  • Evaluate AI-generated information
  • Identify potential errors or bias
  • Use AI to explore ideas
  • Improve and critique their own work
  • Use technology without becoming dependent on it

The goal should not be AI instead of learning.

It should be AI supporting better learning.

Communication Still Matters

Being able to communicate an idea clearly is difficult to automate.

Students need to explain their thinking, write effectively, present arguments and communicate with different audiences.

This is particularly important as students progress toward university and professional life.

A student who understands an idea but cannot explain it clearly will often struggle to demonstrate that understanding.

The Future Belongs to Adaptable Learners

Perhaps the most important skill students can develop is the ability to learn continuously.

Technology will continue to change.

The tools students use today may be very different from the tools they use at university or in their future careers.

Instead of preparing students for one specific tool, education should help them develop the ability to:

Students who can do this will be better prepared for a future that we cannot completely predict.

What This Means for Students Today

Students don't need to become experts in every new technology.

They need a strong foundation.

That means developing:

  • Strong subject knowledge
  • Critical thinking

  • Research skills
  • Digital and AI literacy
  • Independent learning habits
  • Adaptability

Technology can accelerate learning, but it cannot replace the importance of thinking.

It is about combining the strengths of both.

Students still need teachers who can explain difficult ideas, challenge their thinking, identify misconceptions and provide meaningful feedback.

At the same time, technology can provide new ways to practise, explore and extend learning.
